I got a call early this morning and it was a woman from my building telling me that I finally was picked off of a waiting list to have a small plot in our community garden. Boy was I excited! Now I could finally plant some of my dad’s plants that he has grown from seedlings. Tomato plants, pepper plants, red leaf and basil! My own mini garden-something I can take care of and nourish with my own hands. I can watch as a little something grows and turns into a big something. I’m excited!

Then I thought to myself, that’s basically what happens here at the bakery everyday. We use our hands to create all the great things our customers see when they come in. Everything starts off as pieces or ingredients that we piece together to create a larger thing. Our hands help us mix, fold, measure and shape. Our hands take care of and nourish every item from our yeast starter to the cookie dough we shape to create our amazing cookies. All of our items are handled with great care and with lots of love and respect. That is why everything tastes so great!

So I guess when I go home tonight, I’ll treat my hands to a massage. Sometimes I have to stop and think how hard they work everyday. They help me do all the things I love to do in my life- like planting and especially baking, here at the bakery.

Getting to know you…….

Blogs are a great thing. With a few sentences and maybe a picture or two, you can really let someone into your world. That has been our intention with the Levain blog. To share ideas, thoughts and experiences that will make our customers feel they are a part of what happens here. Whether it’s learning a new technical skill or just chatting about our weekend, we want everyone to know what is going on…… Now that I’ve written a few entries and you have gotten to know a little bit about me, I’d like to introduce my great staff. I’ve decided that for the next few weeks, I want to introduce each one of them to you through this blog (if you want to know more about them, you can come visit!). Each staff member will be featured individually and will share a little bit about themselves. You will get to know our production staff, our retail staff and maybe even Pam and Connie! Every single person who works here makes Levain Bakery run smoothly. From the 4 am bakers to the retail person who sells at our last cookie every night-every member of our team counts 100% and now you will get to put a face to the cookie!

Holiday Party Levain Style

This past Sunday we finally celebrated the holidays!!?? I know that may sound strange, but after a long, busy holiday season the whole staff was invited to celebrate at our annual Christmas party. Hosted by Pam and Connie, the night was FILLED with lots of food, wine and laughs!

We celebrated at ‘Cesca, a local Italian restaurant that is right around the corner from the bakery. It was such a great choice – easy to get there for those of us who had to work on Sunday and it offers delicious Italian fare in a beautiful setting. It was so good to be able to see everyone looking their best (no bandanas or Levain t-shirts allowed) and to talk to everyone while sharing a great meal. With some after dinner guests that met us, we all moved up to the bar area to toast, cocktails in hand, to the wonderful year behind us and to the wonderful year to come.

Monday morning arrived quickly and with little sleep and a few headaches, the morning shift arrived ready to start a new week. We spent the morning chatting about what a great time we had and how gracious it was of Pam and Connie to treat us to such a wonderful night. What fun we all had!

Thanks Pam and Connie and we want you to know that we are all looking forward to a great 2009!!

Buon Giorno

cafe latteAfter such a great crazy holiday season at the bakery, I decided to take a break and take a trip to the one place I’ve always wanted to go to – Italy. The moment my plane touched down, I felt totally connected to this wonderful place.  (Exact destination – Firenze). I was instantly in love – the Italian language, the people and especially the food. Everything is just so simple there, simple but wonderful. Don’t get me wrong, I love living here in the states, now more than ever, but there is something very magical about Florence and the towns around it.gina-a-firenze

As I pranced around the city, I was able to visit some really amazing cafes. During my visits, I would notice how fresh everything was and how good everything smelled. I also got to play the part of a tourist and really see how it feels to be on the other side of the counter. ”Buon Giorno, come stai oggi?” was instantly shouted as I entered every café.  Being so far from home, it was so comforting to walk into a place and feel instantly welcomed.  Eating a delicious treat and having a cup of coffee was a special part of my everyday routine .As I was greeted by the servers with big smiles and asked questions about my country, I thought about all the amazing tourists that walk through our doors at the bakery. They come from all over the United States and even all over the world to visit us and feel that same way I felt. I am so proud and happy that my staff and I can do the same. We can offer a great cup of coffee, a wonderful treat and a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere so everyone who visits can feel right at home. We can even shout out a “Buon Giorno!” if you’d like.

Christmas Goodies

It’s the day after Christmas and I just got back from celebrating with my family.  We ate ALOT….my mom cooked a magnificent meal! We played games, opened presents, drank lots of wine, and had plenty of laughs. What a great day.

ginas-parents2          My family is always so fascinated with the going-ons of the bakery. My parents especially, ask lots of questions. They are curious about what we bake and who buys it and what generally happens through the course of my day. It’s so amazing to them how much I love what I do even though it can sometimes be such hard work.

My mom has always loved to bake and cook and did a lot of it with my grandmother growing up. While I was growing up, we did the same and she has been able to pass down some incredible recipes and traditions. She always jokes that one day she will show up at the bakery ready to work so I decided to get her some Levain bakery attire so she would be ready to jump right in. (I also had to get some for my dad so he wouldn’t get jealous!) They loved it!

In fact, I got a piece for everyone in my family. Whether it was a t-shirt, a hoodie or a thermal shirt, they all were very excited to sport the Levain bakery name.  So now with just with one phone call I could get them all working in case I ever need a little extra help.
